Hello, I am Sal Maiolatesi, owner of Maiolatesi Wine Cellars. In the next few minutes, I am going to invite you to take a journey with me through Maiolatesi Wine Cellar’s history and how it originated. Let me begin by telling you a little bit about myself and how this all came to be. It began in Olyphant, Pennsylvania, where I was born and raised. A graduate of Johnson Technical School, I worked eight years as an electromechanical technician for WEA, now Cinram International in Olyphant, Pa. As fate would have it, this would become a stepping stone that would help me realize my dream and assist me in building my very own wine equipment.
My passion for wine began with my great grandfather, who carried the tradition of winemaking from Italy all the way to Jessup, Pennsylvania. In 1999 I opened my winery and was the youngest sole proprietor in PA. In 2003 I decided to leave my full time job, this was a huge risk for me but as the old adage goes, it’s better to try and fail than fail to try. My first location was located on the Scranton/Carbondale Highway in Childs. The inventory I carried back then ranged from fruit sweetened wines to semi-sweet treats to dry whites and reds and from my top-shelf serialized Merit age to a homemade-style potion called Coal Miners Red. It was my goal to make something that would suit every palate.
In 1998 my first daughter, Mia was born and she was the inspiration behind my first series of Mia sweet wines - Mia Bianco, Mia Labruscana, and Mia Rose. Several years would pass and my second daughter Giulia would arrive. Giulia would begin my next series of dry wines- Guilia’s Reserve Merlot, Guilia’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, and Guilia’s Reserve Chardonnay. I would invite you to view my entire wine list under the “wine list” drop down. While there, look for my featured wine of month in which I talk about during my live radio show twice a month on The River (104.9 in NEPA) called “No Wine-ing Wednesday’s”.
Moving on, in 2007 tragedy struck my entire winery in Child’s and I would suffer a total loss and major setback. I vowed to come back bigger and better as production would never really stop. However it wasn’t until a year later that I would be able to resume bottling and selling my wine again.
And now, here we are in 2009 at the all new Maiolatesi Wine Cellars. In July I hosted the official Grand Opening of my 10,000 square foot facility on 36 acres in Scott Township. This all new state of the art facility includes 2,000 square feet of retail space which displays some of my finest wines, gift items such as stem ware, wine racks, serving platters, cheese and cracker cutting boards, and gift baskets that are all able to be customized for any occasion. In addition, there is a beautiful handmade cherry wine bar, complements of my Dad, Sal Sr., which scrolls along the wall of the retail area. This Tuscan themed wine cellar is where you have the opportunity to taste for yourself, prior to purchase the many wines that I personally craft and pride myself on.
At this time, I would like to personally invite you to come in and experience for yourself my “distinctive wines masterfully crafted” and tour my facility where you too can experience for yourself a new favorite wine.
